Hey Podcast Listeners!

Welcome to another edition of What Not to Talk About Over Dinner with Kristin Ladd on KUCI Irvine 88.9FM and kuci.org. I’m glad you joined me for this week’s topic on Atheism and what it means to be Atheist. There are a lot of misconceptions out there about Atheism, and although my guest and I will surely not clear them all up for your, we are going to address some of the more prominent issues surrounding Atheism and its place in politics, spiritual life and ethics. For more information and links on this topic, take a look at my blog: Dinner Supplements.  Thanks and have a great dinner conversation tonight!

You’ve probably heard of the Vagina Monologues, the play performed in over 120 countries and 95 languages that empowers women to fight against abuse and violence against women, but have you heard of the V-Day Movement? The Vagina Monologues, written by Eve Ensler in 1998, started the VDay Movement that has swept the globe in helping to stop violence against women. This week’s podcast focuses on the movement and how you can get involved. For more info, go to my blog, Dinner Supplements or visit the VDay website. Also, you can participate in the movement by auditioning Nov 17-18th on the UCI campus from 7-10pm in Humanities Gateway or coming to the play at UCI Valentine’s Day Weekend. Hope to see you there!

Hey Podcast Listeners -

Ever feel like there’s more to humor than just passing the time? Laughter and comedy can often uplift the spirit and in some cases even bring one out of physical pain or depression. It is also essential to learning how to interact with others and understand oneself over time. In changing one’s perspective to a more satirical and humorous point of view, life can transform to something much less scary, or, as Kevin Smith likes to say “Can distract us from the fact that we’re dying every day.” It’s crude, but funny…well, I guess I’ll leave that up to you to discuss over dinner tonight. For some more fun and comedic websites, check out my blog: Dinner Supplements at kuci.org/dinner.

Hey Podcast Listeners-

Welcome once again to What Not to Talk About Over Dinner’s podcast! We want to apologize for the slight delay these past two weeks in putting up the podcasts (we were tramping around New York and Chicago, scrounging up some new stories for you). But now we’re back and you get 2 podcasts for one this week!

Part I: Students for Integrative Medicine Speaks Out

October 17th’s show is about the Students for Integrative Medicine at UCI. A new organization on campus that seeks to produce and discover the most up-to-date research on alternative medicine and integrating alternative and Western medicines. The club is proud to begin its new year with a larger staff, news spots and this radio program to its name. We hope that it will grow and if you’re interested, you can check them out at sim.ucirvine@gmail.com

Hey Podcast Listeners -

Welcome to another week with What Not to Talk About Over Dinner, KUCI Irvine 88.9 FM’s show about the intersection of faith, politics and real life. On August 1, 2009, we did a show on the Olive Tree Initiative, an organization at UC Irvine that brings students and faculty to the Israel-Palestine region, who are interested in learning more about the conflict and the efforts being made towards peace. This week, after the group’s return from their 22-day adventure, I interviewed three students: Khuyen Lam, Anteaters for Israel internal VP, Aaron Elias and pro-Palestinian student, Nahian Taha, and professor of Political Science, Dr. Daniel Brunstetter on their experiences. Their insight and commentary is invaluable. If you’re interested is seeing them for yourself and asking your own questions, go to the October 13th Appreciating Narratives Forum at Crystal Cove Auditorium, 6-9PM. For more info on the initiative, visit the Olive Tree Initiative website or my blog: Dinner Supplements.

Hope you enjoy your dinner tonight…don’t forget the olives.

Hey Podcast Listeners -

Welcome to the new quarter of What Not to Talk About Over Dinner now on KUCI Irvine 88.9FM and streaming live on the web at www.kuci.org from 12-1pm on Saturdays. Thank you for joining me once more. This week, we discuss Banned Book Week, which in the U.S. ran from September 26th-October 3rd (that is, this is the last day of banned book week, so read up!). Bookstores and libraries brought special attention to challenged and banned books in the United States through Read Outs, Book Drives and other events. Check out Dinner Supplements if you’d like to see a list of challenged books in US and the events that are still going on for the rest of today. Reading what we want to read and allowing our children to read these classics is important for critical thinking and to our First Amendment liberties. I hope you enjoy the show, get a little something to talk about and even encouragement to read.

Hey Podcast Listeners -

Welcome to this week’s What Not to Talk About Over Dinner first aired on KUCI Irvine 88.9FM. This past Thursday, the first week of school for the UC system, students, faculty and staff walked out on all 10 UC campuses in response to the UC budget crisis and rise in student fees. I discuss the walk out, the crisis and how the changes are taking a toll on all those who make the UC campuses run. As well, I went to the rally on the UCI campus and have clips and interviews from those involved. If you’re interested in getting your voice heard or getting involved in this critical issue, please go to Dinner Supplementsand www.upte.org for more information.
